Job Description

An experienced IT professional with advanced technical expertise in networking, Unix-based servers, server virtualisation, storage, and IT security is required in the School of Computing to operate, maintain, manage, and continuously improve its IT infrastructure systems and services, ensuring high availability, performance, and security.


Infrastructure Engineering & Operations

  • Design, implement, manage, and continuously improve SoC IT infrastructure across networking, servers (Unix and Windows), virtualisation, and storage.
  • Manage daily operations of network systems, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless, load balancers, and related services.
  • Manage servers, virtualisation (e.g. Proxmox, VMware), compute clusters, and storage platforms
  • Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of all infrastructure systems and services.
  • Manage server room facilities (UPS, CRAC, power distribution, etc).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues and incidents.


Storage, Backup & Continuity

  • Manage storage and backup systems, ensuring data protection, integrity, and timely recovery.
  • Develop, maintain, and test disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BCP) plans for critical services.


Security & Compliance

  • Implement and enforce IT security policies, standards, and baseline configurations.
  • Deploy and manage security tools (e.g. logging, authentication, intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment, SIEM), and monitor/respond to security risks and incidents.


Automation, Systems Development & Improvement

  • Develop and maintain tools and systems to support automation, system management, asset inventory, and security baseline enforcement.
  • Design, develop, and enhance infrastructure-related services and solutions.


Support & Service Delivery

  • Provide Level 2/3 technical support and guidance to frontline teams.
  • Support teaching and lab environments as required.
  • Participate in standby duties and respond to critical incidents.


Governance, Procurement & Documentation

  • Prepare technical specifications, evaluate solutions, and manage vendors for IT procurements, including budget oversight.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation.


Collaboration & Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and knowledge sharing within the IT team and to stakeholders.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Core Competencies

  • Tertiary degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with at least 10 years of relevant experience in networking, Linux/Unix systems, and IT security.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively across teams.
  • Well-organised, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects effectively.
  • Ability to act as a subject matter expert, providing technical leadership, sound analysis, and mentorship.


Technical Competencies

  • Solid hands-on experience in infrastructure domains such as
    • Operating systems and virtualisation (Linux/Unix, Windows, VMware/Proxmox, file systems)
    • Network infrastructure and services (switching, routing, firewalls, VPN, DNS, DHCP)
    • Storage and backup systems
  • Working knowledge of IT security principles and practices, including system hardening, patch management, and common attack methods.
  • Experience with security operations such as log collection, monitoring, intrusion detection, and incident response.
  • Proficiency in scripting or programming (e.g. Bash, Python) for automation.
  • Familiarity with open-source technologies and common infrastructure tools.


Additional Advantages

  • Relevant certifications (e.g. in networking or security) are a plus.
  • Broad familiarity with end-user platforms (e.g. Windows, macOS) is beneficial.
